973 packed into Volair Park for a first ever meeting in the FA Cup between the two Merseyside clubs and were treated to a game that had everything.
It was Cables who started brightly and went close through Dominic Marie in the opening stages before deservedly taking the lead on 26mins, Lloyd Dean, who was also a scorer at Hyde in the week, climbing highest to bullet home a header from a corner.
Jamie McDonald went close for City of Liverpool soon after before the game took a dramatic turn in the two minutes leading up to half time. Firstly the visitors where awarded a penalty, calmly despatched by John Connolly before a mix up in the home defence allowed Karl Noon to audaciously lob the ball into the net from fully 40 yds as the visitors headed into the dressing rooms with a slender advantage.
The action on the pitch was complemented perfectly by the atmosphere being created off it by both sets of fans, A “Your supposed to be at home” chant was delivered by the visiting fans without a hint of irony, The Purps have been tenants at Bootle FC since their inception in 2016 and are still seeking a home of their own.
The second half started with the visitors looking brightest, though the key moment of the half arrived in the 60th minute, Cables’ Chris Almond brought down in the box and a penalty was awarded to the home side. The aggressive reaction of the visiting defender towards the Cables player brought a red card and the visitors had to see the final 30mins out with ten men.
Dale Wright blasted the penalty home under the diving keeper Steve James who had guessed the right way, all square 2-2.
It was the hosts who finished the game the stronger as the ten men tired, with Almond going closest, but City of Liverpool saw the game through for a replay that they will feel was richly deserved. The sides meet again at Bootle on Tuesday evening, 22nd August.
