An entertaining match eventually went to the home side, but not before Prescot had pushed South Shields all the way.
The game got off to a strong start for Cables as Michael Monaghan opened the scoring in the first minute.
Lee Mason found the net for South Shields in the 18th minute but his effort was disallowed for offside. However, Mason found the net in the 41st minute, scoring at the end of a goalmouth scramble to make it 1-1.
Ten minutes into the second half, Michael Monaghan again gave Prescot the lead. His second goal was very similar to the first, the lively frontman cutting inside to find the net.
Dillon Morse made the score 2-2 from a left wing cross in the 64th minute, before cool composure in the box saw Lee Mason score his second and make it 3-2.
Robert Briggs then drove the ball in from the edge of the box on 86 minutes to help Shields extend their lead to 4-2.
The final goal for Shields came in added time. Jon Morse reacted quickest to the ball coming back off the crossbar, heading it home to make the final score 5-2 to South Shields.
