Cables were left to rue missed opportunities as lowly Brighouse came from behind to earn a surprise victory over a Prescot side which had ensured a Play-Off place with victory over rivals Bamber Bridge in midweek.
Cables largely controlled the first half and deservedly took the lead in the 18th minute. Centre back Joe Herbert, who was up from the back for a corner, steering a header past home goalkeeper George Clarke.
There were few clear cut chances in the half with the only other incident of note being a nasty clash of heads between Brighouse midfielder James Huntley and Cables MJ Monaghan which forced both to depart the action early.
The hosts started the second period very assertively and within a quarter of an hour had turned the game on its head, firstly Aaron Martin equalising turning home a left wing cross at the near post before substitute Mohammed Ibrahim latched onto a long pass, sidestepped Ben Barnes and turned in what would proved to be the winner.
Cables pressed hard for the equaliser but missed a plethora of chances. James Edgar saw the ball squirm agonisingly through his legs with the empty goal gaping after Cain had tested Clarke and again Edgar came close with a bullet header firing just the wrong side of the post.
Brighouse came close to a third when a free header from a corner at the near post failed to test Barnes before loud appeals for a penalty when Chris Almond went down in the hosts’ box were waved away.
It was Almond who came closest to restoring parity when a fine run ended with his effort from the edge of the box flicking over off the crossbar before substitute Josh Klein-Davies tested Clarke who had an exceptionally good second half and wasn’t to be beaten.
