Prescot Cables retained the Liverpool Senior Cup with a fantastic performance away to Evo-Stik League Premier Division side Marine.
To be fair to the hosts, their preparations were severely disrupted by playing to play a League match away at Altrincham 24 hours before this Final, after their scheduled fixture on Tuesday was postponed. However, that should not diminish Prescot’s achievement in winning this tournament for the second successive season.
The first third of the match was evenly balanced but was changed by the award of a penalty to Cables in the 34th minute. Experienced striker Chris Almond coolly rolled the ball into the net to put his team in front.
Lloyd Dean – captaining the side in the absence of James McCulloch, who was working – doubled his side’s advantage just before half-time with a deft header from a right-sided free kick.
The skipper’s renowned aerial prowess gave the Cables a 3-0 lead in the 52nd minute. A well-placed corner was met by the head of Dean who found the net.
With one eye on this afternoon’s match, Almond and Conte were replaced by Morgan Homson-Smith and Aaron Turner and with a couple of minutes remaining, Josh Klein-Davies finished solidly to make the score 4-0 and ensure that the beautiful trophy was again presented to Prescot.
