Goals in each half from Lloyd Dean and James McCulloch were enough for Prescot Cables to earn only their second away victory of 2019 at Clitheroe on Saturday.
Cables took the lead early in the game. Former Clitheroe striker Lloyd Dean was on hand to head home in the 4th minute. After good work from Chris Almond, Luke Griffiths and James Cooper on the right, a shot from Almond was partially cleared and fell to Dean who was able to finish right in front of the Cables fans.
Former Cables player Ben Purdham in the Clitheroe goal was in for a busy afternoon and was tested on several occasions by the forward pairing of Dean and Almond. The pair combined midway through the half to create a chance for Dean to double Cables lead, only for the striker to fire over from 6 yards out.
The second half saw Cables continue to dominate the game and, on another day, Lloyd Dean could have had a hat-trick. His efforts forced Purdam into three consecutive saves before Jordan Wynne fired over the bar on 54 minutes.
The home side came back into the game and were level midway through the second half when George West scored a free kick on 62 minutes. The decision to award the free kick was a strange one; the visitors’ frustrations were compounded when West’s curling effort arched over the wall and into the back of Ollie Taylor’s net.
However, the hosts were level for just four minutes. It was captain McCulloch who again rose to the occasion to restore Cables’ advantage. A beautifully flighted free kick from Luke Griffiths was met at the back post by the Cables skipper who was able to head the ball home and give Cables all three points.
Cables XI: Taylor, Cooper, McNally (Hamilton 33) McCulloch, Coyne, Turner, Griffiths, Wynne (Lenehan 73), Edgar, Almond (Faux 78), Dean.
