It was a case of the late late show this afternoon at the IP Truckparts stadium, as Prescot Cables beat a battling Pickering Town one nil thanks to Reece McNally’s header.
The home side started the game with a makeshift back four after Will Avon withdrew from the squad with a virus and James Cooper still recovering from a knee injury, so Josh Gregory partnered captain James McCulloch in central defence and Rodrego Mann coming in for Valter Fernandes at right back. Cameron Moore made his first start in place of the departed George Hassall.
Perhaps predictably the home side took some side to settle into a rhythm as they adjusted to their new system and the first half produced very few chances. The visitors had perhaps the best chance of the half after they hit the post on 28 minutes.
The second half saw Cables awarded a penalty for hand ball on 58 minutes, the visitors then reduced to ten men when Joel Dixon was given a second yellow card for decent. James Edgar then saw his penalty saved.
With time running out, it seemed like it was going to be another frustrating afternoon for Cables as they continued to be frustrated by the visiting side who were now intent on getting at least a point from the game.
Then on 84 minute Matty Hamilton’s free kick was met by the head of McNally who found the top corner of the net. Cables then endured 6 minutes of added time as they held on for the win.
