Workington 4-0 Prescot Cables: Match Report

A moment of madness from Lloyd Dean resulted in the fastest red card of the season and handed victory to Workington on Saturday at Borough Park.

The game saw Sope Awe start up front as the lone striker following the departure of Louis Myers. Sean Myler came in for Cameron Moore in midfield, while Josh Gregory continued at centre back as James Cooper and Will Avon were both still absent through injury and illness respectively.

The first half saw Cables execute their game plan almost perfectly and were the better side but once again struggled to find the goal that would have given them the lead that their hard work deserved.

Awe and Martyn Jackson produced the two best moments of the half. Awe found himself clean through on goal after exchanging passes with James Edgar but scuffed his shot wide. Then, as the half time whistle approached, Jackson fired a low strike straight at home goalkeeper Jim Atkinson.

Half time arrived and brought with it a torrential hailstorm which battered the pitch for the duration of the interval. As a result, the second half saw less of the slick, free-flowing football that was prominent in the first.

Again, Cables were much the better side until the hour when Awe, returning from injury, tired badly and needed to be substituted. His replacement, Dean, was on the pitch for no more than 25 seconds before being shown a straight red card for violent conduct. The referee left with little choice following a confrontation between the forward and Workington winger Connor Tinnion.

This left Cables without an outlet up front and as a result, the home side were able to force them deeper and deeper into their half. The opening goal came on 72 minutes. A cross from the right found substitute David Symington whose first time shot beat Ollie Taylor.

Five minutes later, it was 2-0 when Ceiran Casson doubled the home sides lead. The game was killed off as a contest on 83 minutes when Symington scored his second, and Workington’s third with an excellent long-range strike. Workington then scored a fourth on 87 minutes when Scott Allison was able to turn James McCulloch and fire the ball low into the Cables net.

Cables XI: Taylor, Schmitdinger, McCulloch, Gregory, McNally, Turner (Antoine 80), Myler, Edgar, Hamilton, Jackson (Moore 62), Awe (Dean 62).
