FREE Football Performance and Lyric Writing Workshop

We wanted to let you know about an exciting new production by 20 Stories High which is aimed at young footballers and may be very relevant to some of your youth teams.

The Spine is about goals, brotherhood and the football academy system. It tackles the pressures young boys face to conform and issues around rejection. It is coming to Knowsley on Thursday 20th at Prescot Library and Friday 21st February at Huyton Library. Tickets are not priced as we’re offering a ‘pay what you can’ system, but if you wanted to bring a group of young people to any of the performances, I can reserve places for you and no charge will be applied for these tickets.

Each performance will be followed by a Q&A with the cast from 20 Stories High. 20 Stories have also been working with other organisations, such as Kick It Out and the LFC Foundation, to support with the production of the show and they are hoping to have a representative from one of these organisations at each performance to also engage with young people during the Q&A session. Once this has been confirmed, I will be able to pass on more information about this.

20 Stories High are also offering a Lyric Writing workshop which will take place before Thursday’s performance at Prescot. If you are interested in this workshop, please let me know and I will be able to book your group onto it before the show. There is also no charge for this workshop.

Please see below for details about the show, including performance times:

Kyle, Liam and Hakeem dream of football, fame and fortune…after spending most of their teenage years being the spine of the team, the premier league is now at their fingertips.

But as they all reach for that golden contract, the cracks begin to appear as years of institutional racism, and hyper-masculinity begin to take their toll. Will the boys be strong enough to stick together, or will they elbow their way to the top?

The Spine is an explosive new show that shines a spotlight on a system that promises the world but leaves over 99% of young men on the side-lines.

With heavy beats, raw performances and silky football skills The Spine is not only a play about football but one which explores what it really means to be a man in the 21st Century.

Thursday 20th February, Prescot Library, 6pm

(Lyric Writing Workshop, 4pm)

Friday 21st February, Huyton Library Culture Hub, 2pm & 7pm

There is an age guidance of 13+ for the performance but this is just a guideline as we understand that the show will still be very relevant to many younger children, so we leave that final decision down to teachers, parents and group leaders as you guys know your young people best and how well they will cope with older themes.
